Dear you work of art,
I returned from a three-week trip to Toronto last weekend. When people asked me what I was there for, I didn't have a direct answer. I just knew I needed to get the F*CK OUT of B.C. Truth be told, there were so many reasons why I needed to go.
One reason why I went was to test my independence. I haven’t lived on my own in over a year and I share a small, one-bedroom apartment with my partner. In Toronto, I was able to stay at my brother’s place while he was out of town and learn if I could survive on my own again after becoming disabled. And, I survived! Yay! I am really proud of myself for living independently, even temporarily. As a disabled person, it is liberating to survive alone, of course with necessary accommodations.
I have a large community in Toronto of friends and professional contacts that made being alone much easier. I met with so many awesome people, including two of my favourite creators and humans in general,
and .But being real with you… lately, I’ve felt depressed, lost and detached from my authentic self. This trip was important for me to create space for myself to reflect and grow. I dedicated ample time to journaling, spiritual and religious practice, and finding a new exercise routine that works for me. Through forced independence and an overlap with Rosh Hashana, I reconnected with myself and my true neshama’s (Hebrew for soul) purpose. I feel better than I have in months.
In Jewish Mysticism and philosophy, it is a common practice to leave somewhere for the sake of returning with clear eyes. Through the act of leaving British Columbia to return as new, I gave myself a fresh start. I returned to B.C. with clear eyes and a deeper appreciation for the city, my little apartment and my partner. And he and I are SO MUCH STRONGER for it.
I had such a fun, transformative time on my little trip that I wanted to share with you all of the things that made it so great! I am obsessed with little treats, stoner-friendly activities, and how to maximize a travel wardrobe for comfort and versatility. After reading some survey replies, I know y’all are dying for some in-depth androgynous fashion and beauty recommendations, so I decided to include every last detail in this email.
